Section J Reports

SECTION J ASSESSMENTS

Commercial energy compliance begins with a considered assessment.

Empire Thermal Group provides clear Section J assessments and practical compliance guidance for commercial and non-residential projects across Australia.

We work with architects, building designers, builders, developers and services consultants to identify the appropriate compliance pathway and coordinate the requirements across the project documentation.

What is a Section J Assessment?

Section J of the National Construction Code Volume One sets out energy-efficiency requirements for commercial and certain non-residential buildings. Depending on the project, these requirements may address the building fabric, façade, glazing, sealing, air-conditioning, ventilation, lighting, power and other building services.

Compliance may be demonstrated through the prescriptive Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions or, where greater design flexibility is required, through a J1V3 Verification Method assessment—commonly known as JV3. We review the project and recommend the pathway most appropriate for the design.

COMMERCIAL ENERGY COMPLIANCE

More than a compliance checklist.

A successful Section J assessment requires more than reviewing individual specifications. The building fabric, façade and services must work together and be accurately reflected across the architectural and consultant documentation.

Our role is to identify potential compliance concerns early, coordinate practical solutions with the project team and prepare clear documentation that supports the building approval and construction process.

What We Assess:

Building Fabric

The thermal performance of roofs, ceilings, walls and floors, including insulation and construction systems.

Glazing and Façade

Window and façade performance, including glazing areas, U-values, solar heat gain and external shading.

Building Sealing

Openings, doors, windows and other areas where uncontrolled air leakage may affect energy performance.

Air-Conditioning and Ventilation

The efficiency, controls and operation of mechanical heating, cooling and ventilation systems.

Lighting and Power

Artificial lighting power allowances, switching, controls and applicable electrical-energy requirements.

Building Services and Energy Monitoring

Heated water systems, lifts, pumps and energy-monitoring provisions applicable to the development.
